DML Presents: African Communities Together - CRS Family Engagement Workshops

Culturally Responsive Family Engagement Series - with African Communities Together

This professional learning series is brought to you by the Division of Multilingual Learners (DML) in partnership with African Communities Together. 

The current workshops available are: 
  • Cultural Competency and Language Access (Tuesday, March 21, 2023: 2-3:30 PM): This 90-minute workshop will address the importance of language access and cultural knowledge to create diversity and inclusion in schools, with a focus on the Gambian and Senegalese communities. Additionally, participants will hear from community members as they share their experiences and offer strategies as parents, educators, and community activists.​​​​​​ 
  • Engaging African English Language Learners (Tuesday, April 25, 2023: 2-3:30 PM): This 90-minute workshop will address the different barriers to engaging with African students and families from the Nigerian and Mali communities. Participants will hear from community members who have had extensive engagement with these families and who will provide strategies that work when engaging this community of African families. 
  • Social-Emotional Learning for African Immigrant Students (Tuesday, May 23, 2023: 2-3:30 PM): This 90-minute session will focus on the importance of social-emotional learning in improving African students’ performance in schools. Participants will hear directly from a panel of community activists and parents from both the Ghanaian and Ivory Coast community.  
*The New York City Department of Education is an approved sponsor of Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE). Important: In order to receive a certificate of completion for CTLE for select sessions, all questions must be answered.
