Literacy Practices for Multilingual Learners in the Science Classroom (Grades 6 - 12)

Description

This four-part professional learning series will provide science educators, and others servicing students in the science classroom, with examples of three instructional routines that support multilingual learners (MLs) with the integration of content and language; The Text Translation Routine, the 3 Reads Routine for MLs, and Discussion & Mini Debate Routines. These research-based, disciplinary literacy practices will support students at the initial stages of English language proficiency in approaching mastery of content, language, and grade level skills in their science classrooms.  Teachers will engage with these routines as students and will have time to collaboratively plan and revise a lesson based on at least one routine of their choosing.

Virtual Series Information:

Session 1: Wednesday May 17, 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm

Session 2: Wednesday May 24, 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm

We will be utilizing materials from Unit 2 of the New Visions Biology Course; therefore, this series is intended for High School and/or Middle School teachers.  Due to the collaborative nature of this PL series, you will be required to participate from a workspace where you can actively engage in the sessions as both a learner and educator with your camera on.   Please register only if you are able to attend and actively collaborate with your peers in all four sessions.
