I can imagine the view of a sober, detached leader in the EU thinking of the insanity of involvement in a war over faraway eastern Ukraine that is really, to begin with, more Russian than Ukrainian. Must remind Merkel of 3rd Reich’s drive to conquer a “country too far”.
Take a whole lot of imaginin’ to find that sober, detached EU leader, I’d say.
If you do find one, don’t dawdle. They usually have a half life measured in nanoseconds.

Zelensky should realize that the Minsk Agreement of 2015 and the other three partners in the Normandy Format represent the best and only hope for Ukraine’s mending. I suppose he does. But can he prevail against the warmongers in his own country and those firebrands shipped in from far-away America and who knows where else? At least Chrystia Freeland has left the foreign affairs department.
