Digitized Maps
Click the bolded text after the bullet points to download shapefiles. Relevant notes about the files are in the descriptions following the links.

World

  • World Map: Shapefile of country polygons. Should be read using coordinate system (EPSG: 4326, WGS 84).
  • Populated Places: Shapefile of cities in the world. (EPSG: 4326, WGS84).

North America

  • North America Rail: Shapefile of vectors of railways in North America. Coordinate system (EPSG: 4269, NAD83).
  • North America Roads: Shapefile of vectors of roads (highways) in North America. Coordinate system (EPSG: 4326, WGS 84).

Europe

  • Europe Rail: Shapefile of vectors of railways in Europe. The coordinate system is a bit antiquated- it is called Clark 1866 ellipsoid. When displaying this, you should define your proj4 string as:
+proj=poly +lat_0=33 +lon_0=10 +x_0=0 +y_0=-2222408.5 +ellps=clrk66 +units=m +no_defs
  • Europe Roads: Shapefile of vectors of roads (highways) in Europe. Again, the coordinate system is Clark 1866 ellipsoid, use the same proj4 as above.

Misc

  • Ancient and Modern Athens/Piraeus: Shapefile discussed in class of ancient Athens and Piraeus with walls compared with modern Athens and Piraeus. To reconstruct the files, start with these images. To open the .qgs file, be careful to edit the directory of the shapefiles to where these downloaded files are saved.
  • CFS Data: Data on locations of the centroids of CFS defined regions, as well as data on bilateral trade between CFS regions via road, rail, and air. Data taken from Allen Arkolakis 2014.
