CHENNAI: Being a vegan can be tough, especially when you travel. And that’s why meet-ups with like-minded people can be interesting.
Vegans in Chennai now have an opportunity to meet and mingle with people with similar dietary and ethical choices from all over the world. On January 20, 2018, a vegan potluck will be held.
‘Welcome 2018: Vegan Potluck with Veg Voyages’, hosted by Tamil Vegan Movement’, a social networking event or meet-up for people interested in promoting veganism and advocating for animal rights, will be held at Hanu Reddy Residences at Poes Garden.

“As vegans, all of us love to explore food, and cuisines from different parts of the world,” says Niranjan Amarnath, HR professional and a vegan himself. “This is the fourth consecutive year that we are holding a potluck,” he adds.
For the event, they have tied up with Veg Voyages, a US-based travel company that organises vegan adventure tours. “People from the US, Canada and Europe sign up for the adventure tours. They offer different packages, and this particular group of around 30 people will be on a south India tour,” says Amarnath. “The first programme on their travel itinerary is to have a potluck with local vegans.”
While the tourists will be carrying packaged vegan food like mock meat and vegan chocolates, local people who sign up can bring Indian vegan fare, such as lemon rice or paniyaram. “Local people bring food for about four people; we also make some food at the venue,” says Amarnath.
The evening will kick off by around 6:30pm and wind up after dinner. “We usually spend a lot of time talking, and sharing our experience and what it is like to be vegan in our home countries,” says Amarnath.
People who are interested in participating in the programme need to register. “They can leave a message with their name and the dish they would like to bring along, on our Facebook event page,” says Amarnath.
