Congratulations to Corporal Sandra Chavez

Meet Corporal Sandra Chavez, currently assigned to the Mounted Unit, has served the Detroit Police Department for over 22 years. Prior to her post with the Mounted Unit, she served various assignments in patrol, vice enforcement, and on the Conspiracy One and Violent Gangs Task Forces. Throughout her career, she has demonstrated a desire for self-improvement and self-discipline, continuously volunteering for additional training and duties wherever she works.

Corporal Chavez was transferred to the Mounted Unit in June of 2018, expressing a desire to work with animals and engage in personal outreach with the community. She succeeded despite the strenuous activity in a traditionally male-dominated aspect of law enforcement. She immediate had a positive impact on the unit and its mission and excels at the many tasks associated with the small but complex entity like the Mounted Unit. She has established herself as an accomplished rider. Atop police Mount “Mirah” Corporal Chavez one First Place in her division at the 2019 North American Mounted Police Equitation Championships. In addition to her assignments with the Mounted Unit, she has taken ownership of the Detroit Mounted Police’s social media presence. Under her care, the Mounted Unit has thousands of social media followers and as a tool for showcasing the community outreach efforts.

Her heart for the community makes her a fixture at parades and events where she greets curious children and citizens who want to meet her and her four-legged partner. She is well-known among her supervisors and peers for her commitment, positive attitude, professionalism, and care for the community. We are proud to recognize her a as a Women in Blue – Officer of the Year nominee.
