Baylor College of Medicine

Baylor College of Medicine (BCM), the only private medical school in Texas and the Greater Southwest, is recognized as a premier academic health science center and is known for excellence in education, research and patient care. For 2011, U.S.News & World Report ranked BCM as one of the top 25 medical schools for research. The college has a total of $400 million in research support, with $344 million from federal sources, and more than 90 research and patient-care centers and units. Currently, BCM trains more than 3,000 medical, graduate, nurse anesthesia, and physician assistant students, as well as residents and post-doctoral fellows. BCM is located in the Texas Medical Center in Houston.

Texas Children’s Hospital

Texas Children’s Hospital (TCH) is an internationally recognized full-care pediatric hospital located in the Texas Medical Center in Houston. One of the largest pediatric hospitals in the United States, TCH is dedicated to providing the finest possible pediatric patient care, education, and research. TCH is ranked nationally in all 10 specialties by U.S.News & World Report in its list of America’s Best Children’s Hospitals. The hospital has garnered widespread recognition for its expertise and breakthrough developments in the treatment of cancer, diabetes, asthma, HIV infection, premature babies, and cardiac and attention-related disorders. The hospital’s award-winning medical staff consists of more than 1,580 board-certified primary-care physicians, pediatric subspecialists, pediatric surgical subspecialists, and pediatric dentists. In addition, TCH offers a dedicated, highly skilled nursing and support staff of more than 6,000.

Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center

The Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC) is supported by more than $26.8 million in competitive grants and awards to its physicians and basic scientists. With more than 643 active research projects, the MEDVAMC research and development program is an integral part of its mission and plays an important role in ensuring that its health care services to U.S. veterans are cutting edge.

The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center

MD Anderson Cancer Center is one of the world’s most respected centers devoted exclusively to cancer care, research, education and prevention. It’s one of the nation’s original three comprehensive cancer centers and has been named one of the nation’s top two hospitals for cancer care by U.S. News & World Report every year since the survey began. As the largest freestanding cancer center in the world, more than 1 million patients have turned to MD Anderson for their cancer care since 1994. The institution pioneered a multidisciplinary approach to research-driven care, and in fiscal year 2014 the institution invested more than $736 million in research. Its faculty is one of the most esteemed in the nation, including nine Institute of Medicine members, three National Academy of Sciences members, four Academy of Arts and Sciences fellows and 32 American Association for the Advancement of Science fellows. The institution awards degrees and each year more than 6,300 trainees take part in varied educational programs.

Harris Health Ben Taub Hospital

Harris Health Ben Taub Hospital has garnered respect both locally and worldwide as an outstanding acute care facility and an elite Level I trauma center. This 586 licensed-bed hospital houses the Ginni and Richard Mithoff Trauma Center, which cares for more than 100,000 emergency patients each year and is known to save the lives of some of the most critically injured.

University of Houston College of Pharmacy

Founded in 1946, the University of Houston College of Pharmacy combines the opportunities and experiences of the Texas Medical Center’s world-class healthcare community with resources of the University of Houston, a Carnegie Foundation-designated Tier One public research university, to offer its professional and graduate students the best possible education. A full member of the TMC since 1980, UH College of Pharmacy aspires to foster a commitment to lifelong learning and an environment where students develop the knowledge, attitudes and skills consistent with the high standards of their profession and/or scientific field. The college’s faculty include many recipients of National Institutes of Health grants, nationally and internationally recognized investigators, and holders of U.S. and international patents. The college is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education and holds membership in the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy.

Gulf Coast Consortia

The Gulf Coast Consortia (GCC) brings together the strengths of its member institutions to build interdisciplinary collaborative research teams and training programs in biological sciences at their intersection with the computational, chemical, mathematical, and physical sciences. Comprised of six prominent and geographically proximate Gulf Coast institutions, Baylor College of Medicine, Rice University, University of Houston, University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston and University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, the GCC provides a unique, cutting edge collaborative training environment and research infrastructure beyond the capability of any single institution. The GCC’s mission is to train the next generation of biomedical scientists and to enable scientists to ask and answer questions that cross scientific disciplines to address the challenging biological issues of our time and, ultimately, to apply the resulting expertise and knowledge to the treatment and prevention of disease.
