Natural-gas pipeline rupture in BC halts flow into the U.S.; campus requested to limit hot-water usage
There was a large natural gas pipeline rupture in northern Canada yesterday.
As a result, natural gas to the state of Washington was stopped this morning at 8 a.m.; Cascade Natural Gas and PSE, which supply gas to Western Washington, are requesting all customers to limit gas usage for heating, cooking, clothes washing, and bathing in order to mitigate the impacts.
For the main campus, the steam plant is transferring to backup oil fuel as a conservation measure. Nighttime setback temperatures will be reduced where practical, and the campus community is requested to limit hot water usage.
At this time no interruption of service has been announced. There is still gas in the pipeline coming from the south, only the northern feed has been stopped entirely. Repairs are expected to take several days. We will update campus as we receive more information.
