Another local school district is taking steps to improve school bus stop safety for its students, according to our reporting partners at WWMT.

White Pigeon Community Schools is equipping students with a new, small tool.

A small tool, expected to make a big difference in terms of visibility on the roads. They are red flashing reflectors.

School officials say they will help drivers see students outside on dark, winter mornings.

The flashers are red and can either flash fast, slow or stay constant. They turn on with the touch of a button.

Students will wear them on the left shoulder strap of their backpack.

The district purchased about 400 of them, each costing just 90 cents.

"There's unexpected events that happen. We can't control those, but if you have something to catch someone's attention, to make them be aware, I think it needs to be done no matter what the cost is,” said Kendra Jones, Director of Transportation White Pigeon Community Schools.

The flashers idea was born before the tragic school bus stop crash in Rochester. But that incident renewed the push to give them to students.
