SATS, the chief ground-handling and in-flight catering service provider at Singapore Changi Airport, is set to invest more than S$1m ($730,000) to digitalise its airport security system in a bid to improve security services.

The new security system will combine several video surveillance points, including wearables, to deliver greater visibility of on-ground activities.

As a result of digitalisation, the manual processes for the tracking of security activities before a flight, aircraft surveillance and flight tracking will be eliminated.

The digitalisation of security systems will offer real-time data about flights and flight tracking, which will ensure better compliance and higher safety standards.

“Our trained security personnel are precious resources; by digitalising our surveillance and tracking processes we can achieve greater visibility of activities.”

SATS Special Projects executive vice-president Denis Marie said: “Our trained security personnel are precious resources; by digitalising our surveillance and tracking processes we can achieve greater visibility of activities on the ground which enables us to be more responsive and proactive without deploying more officers on site.

“This way, we can lift the standard of security services we offer to our customers, even as the supply of qualified personnel is constrained.”

The new system, which will be rolled out progressively, will enable SATS to better manage its resources amid a manpower crunch.

SATS noted that these initiatives also take into consideration the safety of its security personnel at work. For instance, when a body-worn camera is tilted at a certain angle, it is assumed that the officer is down. Subsequently, it will trigger an alarm and activate live streaming in the control room.

SATS currently operates at 62 cities and 60 airports across Asia and the Middle East. It offers complete gateway services which include passenger services, airfreight handling, ramp handling, baggage handling, aircraft interior and exterior cleaning, aviation security services, as well as cruise centre management.
