Contrast & Compare functionality to the other system:
If you have other smart devices on your house you will love Alexa and the ease with which Amazon devices recognize and work with your existing devices. It happens automatically which is very convenient and helpful if you are not a technically inclined person. The other smart speaker assistant requires you to manually link all existing devices to the assistant.
Both Assistants are very easy to work with and provide similar functionality, but there are some differences. As an example, if you ask Alexa to turn off all the lights, she says "OK" and they all turn off. If you follow up with a "ThankYou", there isn't a response. The other assistant's response to the same request is "Ok, turning off (X) - the number of lights you have associated with the system - and they all turn off. And the assistant will respond to a Thank You. I know it's a minor detail, but it's something that will hopefully be addressed in a future upgrade.
The Echo Dot has a great sound, even in a large room. If you are a PRIME member, listening to music is much better than using the other vendor's speaker system. You can easily link your calendar to Alexa and use her to remind you of appointments and/or upcoming tasks. And another interesting feature is the ability to use Alexa to update you on the status of your Amazon orders!
Even though I am a late comer to the Alexa environment, I highly recommend the Echo Dot, and/or any of the Echo speakers to someone looking for a smart speaker. Not only is it a great way to listen to music, but Alexa is a great assistant with some interesting quirks that I'm certain you will find interesting.
Something else that pleased me was how easy it was to stream high quality sound from the Dot to my home stereo. The Echo Dot includes Bluetooth technology; specifically, 4.2 Bluetooth, and the SBC codec. While those aren't really high end specs - current Bluetooth is at 5.2 as I write this, and far better codecs are available - they are good enough to allow for some enjoyable listening. Another writer compared the SBC codec to a high quality MP3 recording, which is a standard embraced around the world. I would personally like to see better Bluetooth and a higher end codec in the next generation; this one is getting a bit long in the (blue)tooth.
But even with 4.2 and SBC, the Echo Dot sounds great. One advantage of streaming to your home stereo is that you get the program in full stereo, not mono coming out of two speakers. Don't quite know how they do it, but there it is. Full stereo. Should your home stereo not have Bluetooth, you can add a Bluetooth Bridge; a small and inexpensive gadget which will connect with Alexa and allow the full glory of its stereo programming to shine forth. I purchased the 1Mii B06 Plus Bridge; here's an Amazon link to the unit I purchased: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B078J3GTRK?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1 For more information, check my review; highly recommended.
I didn't think I would find the clock useful, but I have found that I tend to look at it quite frequently. Of course it pulls it's accuracy from your internet service provider, which is always spot on. I have a few clocks around the house that are synchronized to the atomic clock time signal out of Fort Collins, Colorado; and the clock in the echo dot is accurate within a second. So it's not only a useful clock, it's accurate. Something they added with this version of the Dot was a much more functional display. In previous generations you only got a time display, but in this generation the display is much more flexible; song titles are displayed, streaming music providers are displayed, and the system tried to anticipate what information you might seek and display it. What I particularly like is the count down timer; ask Alexa for a 3 minute timer and it starts it, complete with displaying the count down sequence on the screen. This is fantastic in the kitchen for timing everything from eggs to steaks. Bravo Alexa!
I have Alexa controlling my stereo, my TV - heck, my entire media center - through the use of an inexpensive InfraRed Blaster, a Broadlink RM4, which is set up to work with Alexa. While there have been a few hiccups, on the whole it has worked out great and is a technology I recommend. Here's an Amazon link to the blaster I purchased: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0872PPSGM?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details Again, highly recommended; it really allows Alexa to rise to a new level of automating your home.
In closing... yes, this is a spectacular product to bring into your home. It is useful, unobtrusive, and fun. So, highly recommended. Buy several; after a few weeks, you'll wonder how you ever got through life without them!
