Description

Wallet 1 of 1 – Typescript address, 'The Landing', given to students at Royal Military College Duntroon, 24 April 1923.

This collection consists of two typescripts of 'The Landing', an address given by CEW Bean to students at Royal Military College Duntroon, 24 April 1923.

The address itself is five pages in length, and each version includes typed amendments to the manuscript. The second copy also includes handwritten amendments. The text describes the landings on the Gallipoli Peninsula eight years earlier in descriptive language, including details such as cups of hot cocoa and the shouted commands of officers.

Bean describes the landing as the equivalent for Australians as Crecy and Agincourt were to the British, ending his speech by declaring that graduates of Duntroon would be judged against the standard set by those in Gallipoli.
