Families are calling for change after a man and a child died in a wreck at a Raleigh interseciton over the weekend.
Francisco Jaquez and his girlfriend’s son, Alfred Rodriguez Inoa, died Sunday in a car crash.
Jaquez’s oldest son said his father had just dropped his girlfriend off at work and was headed home.
“My father was a hero,” Francisco Jaquez Jr. said.
It happened at the intersection of Louisburg and Fox roads.
“He was just a very nurturing, caring person. He was always around the kids, always cared for all of us,” Jaquez Jr. said.
Police said Jaquez was trying to cross Louisburg Road when their vehicle was t-boned by another car.
“How many people have to pass or get in accidents for them to fix the actual intersection? It makes no sense to me,” Jaquez Jr. said.
Jaquez’s family and friends attended Tuesday evenings Department of Transportation meeting, hoping that something would be done to make the intersection safer.
NCDOT had already identified the intersection as a problem before Sunday’s crash. They said they’re trying to gather feedback from the community.
“There actually should be a traffic light,” neighbor Pryce Blair said.
NCDOT proposed making the intersection a super street. That would involve putting a median in the center, preventing drivers from making left turns off Fox Road. It would also keep them from driving through Louisburg Road.
“We’ve seen it work in other incidents where it has cut down on the number of collisions,” Jaime Kritzer with NCDOT said.
“It’s just something that should be fixed,” Jaquez Jr. said.
Kritzer said super streets have been shown to reduce collisions by 60 to 70 percent. He also said NCDOT would also be willing to consider at stop light.
They hope to have the improvement in place by 2020.
