History

The Hurd/St. Andrew's Library is one of four regional libraries which were opened between January and June of 1992. Hurd/St. Andrew's opened June 18, 1992. The regionals have identical physical plans and are all 14,000 square feet in size. Each has an auditorium for use by the public.

The branch was renamed on June 21, 2016, to honor Cynthia Graham Hurd, a 31-year library employee who was one of nine people killed in the Emanuel AME Church shooting in June 2015. The ceremony unveiling the new name happened on Hurd's birthday. It would have been her 56th. Hurd was the manager of the St. Andrews Regional Library at the time of her death.

Hurd, who also spent years of her library career at the John L. Dart branch in downtown Charleston, is memorialized with a mural by artist R. ROBOTS
