Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Practice in the Workplace of the Future | September 13, 2023

The 2023 Expanding Research Partnerships series focuses on leveraging collaboration to address key challenges to OSH research, training, and practice. During the September 13 webinar, presenters focused on occupational safety and health (OSH) practice in the workplace of the future. Robert Emery from University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston described on-going efforts at a major biomedical education, research and clinical care university to provide a more holistic approach to protecting the health and well-being of its entire population; Scott Earnest and Elizabeth Garza from NIOSH presented how they have been able to leverage national partnerships to tackle the top construction safety and health challenges such as falls and struck-by; and Mitchel Rosen from the Rutgers School of Public Health provided an overview of how to engage partners and develop collaborations that are beneficial to multiple interest groups.

New Approaches to Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Training | June 14, 2023

The 2023 Expanding Research Partnerships series focuses on leveraging collaboration to address key challenges to OSH research, training, and practice. The June 14 webinar featured engaging presentations on how the panelists have taken new approaches to OSH training. Subject matter expert panelists provided perspectives from academic and research settings. Featured speakers were Lily Monsey from the University of Washington, Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences; Ismail Nabeel from Mount Sinai; Brett Perkison from the University of Texas; and Kaitlin M. Gallagher from the University of Arkansas.

The 2021 Expanding Research Partnerships series explores the future of occupational safety and health (OSH) in a post-pandemic world in the U.S.  The September 8 webinar explored OSH professional association perspectives on worker health and safety in the post-pandemic world. Speakers from professional associations included: Robert Bourgeois, American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine; Chris Cunningham, Society for Occupational Health Psychology; Joel Haight, American Society of Safety Professionals; and John Mulhausen and Larry Sloan, American Industrial Hygiene Association.

Exploring the Future of Worker Health and Safety in the Post-pandemic World: the Employer Group Perspective | June 9, 2021

The 2021 Expanding Research Partnerships series explores the future of occupational safety and health (OSH) in a post-pandemic world in the U.S.  The June 9 webinar explored employer perspectives on worker health and safety in the post-pandemic world. Employers represented the agriculture, manufacturing, oil and gas, and transportation industries. Featured speakers were Gary Childress from Oil States Energy Services, Barbara Dawson from DuPont, Brian Fielkow from Jetco Delivery, and Paul Riley from the Agriculture Safety and Health Council of America.

Exploring the Future of Worker Health and Safety in the Post-pandemic World: The Labor Perspective | March 10, 2021

The 2021 Expanding Research Partnerships series explores the future of occupational safety and health (OSH) in a post-pandemic world.  The March 10 webinar explored perspectives on worker health and safety in the post-pandemic world from labor associations of major industries in the U.S. Featured speakers from labor groups were Amy Bahruth from the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), Lamont Byrd from the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT), Chris Cain from North America’s Building Trades Union (NABTU), and Mark Catlin from the Service Employees International Union (SEIU).

Developing Partnerships during a Pandemic | September 2, 2020

The September 2020 installment of the Expanding Research Partnerships series explored the development of new research partnerships during a pandemic. The featured presentations discussed integrating worker safety and health research with the COVID-19 public health response, engaging seafood processing workers during a pandemic, promoting worker health and equity during COVID-19, learning from and helping small businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic, offering technical support and educational opportunities during a pandemic, disaster workforce planning for 2020 and beyond, and promoting safe practices for reopening and return to work. Featured speakers were Angela Weber, Elizabeth Whelan, Laura Syron, and Kaitlin Kelly-Reif from NIOSH; Elizabeth Fisher from the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health; Marissa Baker from the University of Washington School of Public Health; Dede Montgomery from the Oregon Healthy Workforce Center, Oregon Institute of Occupational Health Sciences; Jennifer Marshall from the University of South Florida Sunshine Education and Research Center; and John Staley from the University of North Carolina, Occupational Safety and Health Education and Research Center.

Future of Work and Implications for Aging Workers | June 10, 2020

The June 2020 installment of the Expanding Research Partnerships series addressed the future of work and implications for aging workers. The featured presentations explored the intersection of aging, worker well-being, and the future of work; the interaction of an aging workforce, emerging technologies, and changes in work organization; and retirement, health, and new employment trends for aging workers. Featured speakers were L. Casey Chosewood and James Grosch from NIOSH, and Martin Cherniack and Jennifer Garza from the University of Connecticut Health Center.

Future of Work and Implications for Occupational Safety and Health | March 11, 2020

The March 2020 installment of the Expanding Research Partnerships series addressed the future of work and implications for occupational safety and health. The featured presentations explored risks and opportunities in the future of work, mapping the future of work for the safety and health of workers, and horizon scanning to identify emerging OSH issues. Featured speakers were John Howard and Paul A. Schulte from NIOSH and Andy Hines from University of Houston.

Occupational Safety and Health Issues of Emerging Technologies | June 12, 2019

The June 2019 installment of the Expanding Research Partnerships series addressed occupational safety and health (OSH) issues associated with emerging technologies. The featured presentations explored collaborative future of work research under the NIOSH Advanced Manufacturing Initiative and the role of partnerships to advance research and guidance for occupational safety and health in nanotechnology. Featured speakers were Charles Geraci from NIOSH and Nicole M. Neu-Baker from SUNY Polytechnic Institute.

Robotics and Workplace Safety and Health | April 10, 2019

The April 2019 installment of the Expanding Research Partnerships Webinar Series explored the relationship between robotics and workplace safety and health. The featured presentations addressed occupational robotics safety and health research at NIOSH, the ergonomic benefits of personal collaborative robots, and the use of probabilistic posture modeling to enhance the ergonomics and safety of human-robot collaborations. Featured speakers were Dawn Castillo from NIOSH, Fadi Fathallah from University of California, Davis, and Andrew Merryweather from University of Utah.

Health and Safety in Construction | November 14, 2018

The November 2018 installment of the Expanding Research Partnerships Webinar Series focused on advancing occupational safety and health in the construction sector.  The featured presentations explored the role of partnerships in preventing workplace musculoskeletal disorders and the development of leadership skills to strengthen safety climate. Featured speakers were Juliann Scholl from NIOSH and Linda Goldenhar from CPWR – The Center for Construction Research and Training.

New Technologies to Reduce Exposure to Health and Safety Hazards | May 16, 2018

The May 2018 installment of the Expanding Research Partnerships Webinar Series explored new technologies to reduce exposure to health and safety hazards.  The featured presentations discussed an innovative tool for assessing workers’ exposure to respirable dust and other contaminants and new procedures and practices to reduce fatal and non-fatal trauma incidence rates in the logging industry. Featured speakers were Andrew Cecala from NIOSH and Robert Keefe from the University of Idaho.

Work and Health-Related Factors Associated with Injury and Illness Outcomes | February 14, 2018

In February 2018, the inaugural Expanding Research Partnerships webinar explored work and health-related factors associated with injury and illness outcomes. The featured presentations addressed health-related predictors of workers’ compensation claims and the relationship between work arrangements, job stress, and health-related quality of life. Featured speakers were Tapas Ray from NIOSH and Erin Shore from the Colorado School of Public Health.
