We, the concerned residents of Arlington, Virginia, stand united in opposition to the proposed destruction of the historic, over 100-year old, Clarendon Presbyterian Church (CPC) and the subsequent construction of a massive 6-story apartment building having over 100 units within our cherished residential neighborhood.

CPC’s request is significantly beyond the land use plan approved by Arlington County, which has the property slated to become a community park if the church were to be replaced. Lyon Village was built as a single-family neighborhood, which was recently expanded to include up to 6-plexes on single-family lots. But the CPC wants to build much more height and density than the Expanded Housing Options provided by Missing Middle.

We believe that this development project will have serious detrimental effects on our community's character, quality of life, and historical heritage.

1. Historical Significance:
CPC has been an integral part of our community since its establishment in 1906. Its beautiful architecture and rich history make it a valuable landmark that should be preserved for future generations to appreciate. Destroying such an iconic structure would erase an essential piece of Arlington's cultural identity.

2. Impact on Residential Neighborhoods:
The proposed apartment building is not compatible with the existing residential character of our neighborhood. The excessive height and density will disrupt the harmony and tranquility we currently enjoy. Increased traffic congestion, parking issues, noise pollution, and strain on local infrastructure are inevitable consequences that will negatively impact our daily lives. In addition, in the immediate neighborhood, four large buildings have already been built in the last 4 years with a total of 1000+ units and it is expected that the YMCA tennis facility and St. Charles will be replaced by major residential buildings with at least 600+ further units.

3. Environmental Concerns:
The construction of the apartment building will require the destruction of a beautiful playground, resulting in a significant reduction in green space and the cutting of trees. In addition, the construction process alone will generate significant environmental damage through increased carbon emissions, noise pollution, dust particles in the air affecting air quality standards for nearby residents' health concerns. This is further exacerbated by other adjacent constructions, like the YMCA, which are also expected to reduce green space since a great number of trees will be cut.

Aurora Highlands (Melwood project at 750 S. 23rd Street), is facing a similar situation, and your support by signing this petition is equally important to both Aurora Highlands and Lyon Village.
