9 Fort Collins, Windsor high school basketball teams make 5A playoffs

The Fossil Ridge girls basketball team is the No. 5 seed in the 5A state tournament as the SaberCats hunt a return trip to the Final Four.

Nine local high school basketball teams qualified for the Class 5A playoffs.

Four of those will play at home in their opening playoff game.

The 5A playoffs consist of 48 teams. The top 16 receive a first-round bye.

The 1A through 3A classifications are competing in district and regional tournaments this week.

5A girls

Fossil Ridge, Fort Collins, Poudre, Rocky Mountain and Windsor all made the 5A playoffs. Fossil Ridge and Windsor both earned first-round byes.

Fossil Ridge (19-4) is the No. 5 seed and will wait until Friday to drop into the playoffs when the SaberCats will host a second-round game against the winner of No. 28 Denver South and No. 37 Poudre.

Windsor (19-4) is in its first year competing in the 5A playoffs and the Wizards earned the No. 8 seed. They'll host a second-round game at 6:30 p.m. Friday against the winner of No. 25 Legacy and No. 40 Castle View.

Poudre (9-14) is the No. 37 seed and will play at No. 28 Denver South (16-7). The winner advances to the second round to play at No. 5 Fossil Ridge on Friday.

Rocky Mountain (9-14) is the No. 39 seed and will play at No. 26 Far Northeast Warriors (16-7). The winner will play at No. 7 Horizon in the second round.

Fort Collins (8-15) is the No. 41 seed and will play at No. 24 Chatfield (14-9) in the first round Tuesday. Winner will advance to play at No. 9 Broomfield in the second round.

5A boys

Fossil Ridge, Poudre, Rocky Mountain and Windsor all made the 5A playoffs, with the SaberCats and Impalas set to host first-round games on Wednesday.

Poudre (15-8) is the No. 28 seed and will host No. 37 Pomona (12-11) at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. The winner advances to Saturday's second round to play at No. 5 ThunderRidge.

Fossil Ridge (13-10) is the No. 32 seed and will host No. 33 Pine Creek (13-10) at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. The winner advances to Saturday's second round to play at No. 1 Chaparral.

Rocky Mountain (13-10) is the No. 34 seed and will play at No. 31 Liberty (13-10) at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The winner advances to Saturday's second round to play at No. 2 Mountain Vista.

Windsor (12-11) is in its first season competing in the 5A playoffs and the Wizards are the No. 35 seed and will play at No. 30 Valor Christian (11-12). The winner advances to Saturday's second round to play at No. 3 Rangeview.

Tip times for Wednesday's first-round games are not yet set unless otherwise noted.

3A Districts

The Liberty Common girls are into the Patriot League quarterfinals and will play at Platte Valley at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. The Liberty Common boys were eliminated in the first round of district play.

The Resurrection Christian boys will host Valley at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Patriot League quarterfinals. The Resurrection Christian girls will host Sterling at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the quarterfinals.

1A Districts

The Front Range Baptist boys will host Beth Eden in the District 8 quarterfinals at 6 p.m. Monday. 

The Front Range Baptist girls play at Shining Mountain at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the District 8 semis.
