Saginaw Valley State University Athletics mourns the passing of Men's Basketball Assistant Coach Kalen Foreman, 25, who passed away from an apparent heart attack in the early morning hours Thursday, April 19.

Foreman, a native of Detroit, had been a part of the SVSU Men's Basketball program for the past six seasons. After finishing his playing career with the Cardinals in 2014-15, Foreman moved to the bench and served as an assistant coach for the Cardinals for the past three seasons.

During his coaching span, SVSU compiled a record of 54-36 and claimed the 2015-16 GLIAC Championship en route to making a run to play in the 2016 NCAA Division II Elite Eight in Frisco, Texas. The Cardinals capped-off a stretch of three straight seasons with at least 17 victories in Foreman's second season (2016-17), which marked the first time in the program's 48-year history that was accomplished.

Foreman graduated from SVSU with his bachelor's degree in health sciences before earning his master's degree in public administration this past December.

"Kalen contributed a great deal to SVSU during his time as a student, player and coach," said Donald Bachand, SVSU president. "It was evident that he was well-liked on campus, and he could usually be found with a smile on his face. He will be missed. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends."

Kalen had recently accepted an assistant coaching position with the University of Mary in Bismarck, North Dakota and was set to join the Marauders for the upcoming 2018-19 campaign.
