Black Water Magic

Rate this book
Teagan Blackwater’s biggest problem used to be hiding her relationship with a demi-demon from her grandmother, Nola, the most powerful witch in all of Florida.

When Nola is murdered, Teagan learns how insignificant her secret really was. And how rare it is she only had the one. Firewater Springs is a small town, and every one of its residents seems to have secrets of their own. Including the friendly cop Teagan had a crush on in high school and the Demi-demon she’s been sleeping with.

But the person with the most secrets was Nola herself, and Teagan needs to unravel them to break a curse and solve Nola’s murder. It’s no secret Teagan doesn’t feel up to the task, but she is the new Swamp Witch of Firewater Springs, so what choice does she have? Everyone is counting on her.

No pressure.

Award winning author, Leslie Scott thrives in the middle of chaos. Not because she home schools her son and rides herd over the family's zoo of indoor pets or listens to her soul mate wax poetically about all things car and related. Oh, no. That's nothing. The real chaos is the characters in her mind, elbowing and tripping each other to get to the front of the line so they can be the next romantic couple in one of her stories. Her family is her passion. Writing is her dream.

BLACK WATER MAGIC is the first book in the Teagan Blackwater series, and it starts with the magical murder of Nola as Teagan lazes around in post-coital bliss. Now Teagan is on the back foot as she tries to figure out her new role, gain the respect of the magical community, solve a murder, and break a curse.

I enjoyed this book from start to finish, with the different characters and their secrets. It is only the first book in the series, so I expected there to be parts of world-building, back-story, etc. I can't say as I particularly liked Colby, ignoring the fact that he's a Viking Demi Demon!

The tropes of gay best friend and being naïve are a bit overdone for my liking, but it works for this story. I really can't wait until Teagan grows into her powers though, and fights on an equal footing.

A smooth pace, well-written, and with a great storyline, this is definitely recommended by me.

The first in a series about a young witch fighting to discover exactly what has been kept from her begins with the gruesome murder of her beloved grandmother Nola. Teagan at the beginning of this book comes across as a somewhat spoiled, carefree young woman who isn’t looking for any commitments. She has an almost friends with benefits relationship with Colby, a local Demi Demon MC member but everything comes to a head when they discover Nolas body. Pretending that her grandmother has mysteriously disappeared Teagan tries to discover who the murderer is but quickly realises that whilst trying to undoubtedly protect her Nola kept dangerous secrets from Teagan . Secrets that are now coming back to haunt her !
I really enjoyed this and thought that the author did a very good job of showing growth in Teagan. She’s definitely sharp minded but has been totally oblivious to so much. Using the Florida swamps as a backdrop added atmosphere and I’d certainly like more of that in subsequent instalments. The supporting characters around her are fun and added much to the story. Her love life however is more than a little muddled with Colby, the Viking Demi Demon who is also president of the local MC being if I’m blunt odd ! I did get tired of being told repeatedly that he’s a Demi Demon but honestly he just didn’t feel real to me. Perhaps that’s because at times the writing felt jumpy and I thought I’d missed something and had to reread a few sentences. I’m not sure if the sentences used are what the author intended or if perhaps a different editor would have noticed.
This story has a lot to offer though and I enjoyed seeing Teagan become a Witch to be reckoned with. She has powers that are clearly growing and uses both them and her own ingenuity to great effect as this story came to a close. Her sheltered life has definitely been shattered and it will be interesting learning what happens next. As for romance will she forgive Colby or perhaps take a walk on the wild side with Sean the local Deputy ? ! There were very intriguing mentions throughout of a traveling circus and I cannot help but wonder if it connects to Nola and indeed other relatives of Teagan but I feel my suspicions might indeed contain spoilers so my lips are sealed. A very good start to a series that I’d like to read more of.
This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

It is no secret that Leslie Scott's kissing books are some of my favorites BUT my heart belongs in its weird entirety to sci-fi and urban fantasy and has since I was tiny. I was thrilled when I found out Leslie was releasing an urban fantasy witchy (ok, with some kissing) delight.
I enjoyed the crap out of this book. I may be a tad on the biased side but the characters in this book are as wholly imaginative as any Leslie has created. Teagan and Oliver make my soul smile and I sort of need to know where one picks up a centuries old viking biker demi-demon. You know. For science.
Im in love with the start of this series. I want to live in the Crazy Eight. I need to hang out with these people. I need to know what happens next dammit and I am so beyond thrilled at what I could see becoming an easy read many, many, novel series in a field that is sadly unexplored. Leslie did it again. What a treat this is.

Teagan Blackwater is your typical young witch. She’s learning her powers from her grandmother, who runs the area. There’s no coven, but Nola Blackwater is the one everyone turns to when there’s an issue. She also owns the trailer park they live in and other properties around town.
One night while Teagan is with her demi-demon friend when they feel an unusual power shift. They immediately dress and head to Nola’s house where they come across her gruesome murder. The Swamp Witch was killed with an unusual looking athame, one Teagan hasn’t seen before. This means that Teagan’s now the Swamp Witch, the power of the swamp that her grandmother once controlled now shifts to her, and the first thing she has to do is solve her grandmother’s murder. At the same time, she has to stop a demi-demon from taking off with a virgin, an out of control ghost who’s haunting a strip mall, and a nosy human cop that might just get too close to Nola’s case. Plus, she needs to find out who Kaida is and how she fits in to everything.
That’s a lot for anyone to take on, let alone someone who isn’t sure how to control her new powers yet. Will Teagan be able to take care of all the magical people in the swamp and earn their respect? Will she be able to free the ghost, save the virgin, and solve her grandmothers murder?
This was the first time I’d read a novel by Ms. Scott and I can’t wait to read more! The blurb intrigued me, and I grabbed the ARC even though I was booked up. I’d never heard of a Swamp Witch and wanted to read about it. I devoured this book in one sitting! I can’t wait for book 2. Great writing, wonderful characters, and a storyline that drags you in and keeps you under, just like the swamp.
**I received an ARC of this story from Netgalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.

When Teagan's Grandmother , Nola , is murdered with an athame , she inherits the role of Swamp Witch .
With the title comes new abilities and new responsibilities - saving a virgin from a demi-demon , ridding the strip mall of the ghost haunting are just two .
Her personal life is also a mess - sleeping with demi-demon but lusting after the local deputy sheriff , who just happens to be a werewolf , brings its own troubles .
Solving her Grandmother's murder and coming to terms with her new powers whilst juggling the men in her life is overwhelming at times ........ is she up to the job ?

This is an enjoyable , fun book with great characters - keep an eye out for a cranky gator , her gay best friend
along with a Viking warrior - I look forward to reading more books by this Author

Teagan Blackwater has secrets. HUGE secrets. But when she discovers her grandmother, Nola, murdered, Teagan quickly learns that she wasn’t the only one hiding something. Nola was hiding truths, too. Truths that apparently eclipse Teagan’s forbidden relationship with a demi-demon.

With curses to break and secrets to unravel, Teagan’s in a race against time to solve her grandmother’s murder. The tiny town of Firewater Springs may never be the same (and Teagan sure won’t be!).

Leslie Scott outdoes herself again with this colorful urban fantasy with hints of romance and a colorful supporting cast. You never quite know what creature might pop out of the next page, and subtle hints add up to surprising bombs as the story progresses.

Teagan’s journey isn’t done here, and I look forward to book 2 in the series.

I didn't like the story at the start, but something made me keep turning pages and by the end, I was on the edge of my seat. :)

Teagan is living with her grandmother Nola, the swamp witch, is more worried about hiding her boyfriend, demi-demon from her. One night she comes home, only the find Nola dead in the backyard. As her successor, her world gets a whole lot more complicated than hidden boyfriends, who everyone seems to know about.

She has to find out who did it and resolve the curse, not everyone is happy about sharing the info with her until she proves herself.

It's a page-turner, with a slow start. I love the storyline, even though it was all over the place at times. :) And Teagan, she is strong, yet vulnerable... someone you can't help but like. And with every secret she uncovers, there seems to be a whole bunch of new ones spilling out. I can't wait to see what happens next for her. :)

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. A swamp witch is an unusual theme and caught my interest immediately. Teagan has quite a mystery to solve and a vindictive ghost to release. O'Dell turned out to be quite a surprise. Certainly did not see his abilities creeping up. So many different characters from a Viking warrior, demi-demons, witches and the lone werewolf just to mention a few. I will add this author to my watch list. I received a copy of this book from NetGalley and freely leave this honest review.

A magical journey

I love this book. The writer really allows you to bury yourself in her world. The characters came to life I could envision them and cannot wait to see more adventures from them. II read this book on a trip with a girlfriend and we wanted the trip to last longer so we could read more LOL

Good Start

I liked the book, but I am getting tired of the gay/lesbian best friend. I could get into it if they had a function other than the comedy relief. But they don’t. They are all cookie cuter side kicks.

When Teagan's grandmother is murdered, Teagan assumes the position of Swamp Witch and the power that goes with it. The responsibility that accompanies the mantle is overwhelming at times. The characters are fascinating and multifaceted. I love a bad boy and Colby was perfect. I'm also practical and a handsome werewolf cop has potential. But mostly, I am fascinated by Teagan. The character is strong enough to accept help and has enveloped herself with a strong support system. I am new to this author's work and am pleased to make the acquaintance. I am eagerly awaiting the next in the series. I read this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Enjoyable

A paranormal story wrapped in a mystery within a mystery. Well written characters, unique, quirky and so interesting. I didn't expect to get hooked but the storyline just kept getting more and fascinating and I was at the end of the book before I knew it. Can't wait to read the next book as I want to know what happens next.

My first book from Leslie Scott and I really enjoyed the world that she has created, full of paranormals included witches, demons and vampires. There's an interesting mix of characters with the main one being Teagan, a young witch who discovers her grandmother, Nola, the Swamp Witch of Firewater Springs and the most powerful witch in Florida, has been murdered. This leaves her with a lot of responsibility and unanswered questions with more arising before getting any answers. On her side is her best friend, Oliver but everyone else she has to be wary of.
With a murder to solve and unsure who to trust, she powers through, and it makes for an entertaining story as connections and relationships develop and secrets come to light, knocking Teagan for six nearly every time. It took me a little while to really connect with her character but it's definitely worth sticking with as she comes into her own over time. It's good at making you think about who she can trust as there are hints of positive and negative for quite a few people with a lot of secrecy around and then there's contemplating who and why in regard to Nola's murder.
We're left at a good place with a lead up to the next book in the series, Carnival of Shadows. I'm very interested to get to know the cop better after Teagan finds out something about him along with some memories that are recovered that leads Teagan to yet more questions for the future.
