An Overview

The Deputy Director-Department of Code Administration reports to the Director and functions as second in command.  The incumbent assists the Director and supervises the New Construction and Plan Review Divisions.

We're looking for a proven professional leader with the energy, vision, desire and passion to help lead our department. The position requires strong division management performing a wide range of complex duties involving strategy development, communication and directing of the New Construction and Plan Review divisions. This includes providing leadership to the entire department. This professional leader will work independently and effectively with minimum supervision.

The Opportunity – Examples of Work
  • Exercises functional authority of the Director in administering all Code Administration activities throughout the City, and acts as Building Official and Maintenance Code Official in the absence of the Director;
  • Ensures consistent and appropriate application of the Uniform Statewide Building Code (USBC), City Ordinances, state codes, recognized standards and Department policies and procedures;
  • Represents the Department at City, State and Regional meetings for construction and development issues, which may include occasional nights or weekends;
  • Coordinates with other City departments and agencies in Code Administration matters;
  • Develops procedures to implement City and Departmental policies and regulations applicable to provisions of building construction and property maintenance standards and codes;
  • Responds to formal and informal inquiries and /or disputes via phone, e-mail, written correspondence, in person, or in group settings from citizens or staff from City, State or other agencies about permit processes, procedures, refunds, code requirements, code changes, customer initiative, and/or staff interactions;
  • Exercises full supervisory authority for assigning supervisors, manages workloads ensuring deadlines are met, and coordinates/confers on special projects;
  • Performs related work as required.
About the Department

The Alexandria Department of Code Administration works in concert with other City agencies and our customers (residents, tenants, business owners, building owners, architects, engineers, builders, contractors, and developers) as part of the safe building team.  Our objective is to assist customers to achieve compliance with the Virginia's Uniform Statewide Building and Maintenance Codes (USBC), and the City Code nuisance and development provisions.  This is accomplished through permit processing, plan review, timely and consistent inspections, and education regarding the requirements of the referenced codes.  The department contains five divisions: the Permit Center, Property Maintenance Inspections, New Construction Inspections, Plan Review Services, and Administrative Services.  Learn about our values, commitment and goals - ONE TEAM, ONE CITY - OUR CITY 
 
 
 

Minimum & Additional Requirements

Four-year college degree; Considerable progressively responsible supervisory experience in public administration and code enforcement, including all areas listed in minimum experience; and completion of college level courses in public administration, architecture, structural engineering, fire prevention, housing or a related field; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities; certification as a Building Official through the Department of Housing and Community Development.

Additional Requirements: Completion of the Advance Building Officials modules of the Virginia Building Code Academy
