The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (SHA) is recruiting for several Transportation Engineer I positions throughout the State of Maryland. The recruiting offices and an overview of the positions are as follows:
 
Transportation Engineer I (Travel Forecasting)
Office of Planning and Preliminary Engineering - Travel Forecasting & Analysis Section
This is an entry level position, responsible for assisting in providing traffic/travel demand information for and performing traffic analyses of planning and highway design projects.  The work requires knowledge of traffic engineering/analysis, traffic simulation tools, and travel demand forecasting. 

Transportation Engineer I (Planning)
Office of Planning and Preliminary Engineering - Project Management Division
This is an entry level position with assignments focusing on concept development and project feasibility analyses.  This includes establishing project goals, developing alternatives, and evaluating design criteria against project constraints to identify opportunities and challenges.  Analyses are used to help support project programming decisions and obtain environmental clearance approvals.  In addition to other duties, the project planner will participate in various analyses including:  geometric layouts, applying data from various environmental and engineering assessments, cost estimating, stakeholder facilitation, and general project management support functions.

Transportation Engineer I (Structures)
Office of Structures-Structural Design & Remedial Engineering
This position will require applying structural engineering theories, principles, and standards to a variety of transportation structures. New engineers will be involved with the design of new bridges, bridge deck replacements, bridge rehabilitation and repairs, culverts, retaining walls, and noise abatement walls. They will also be involved with performing hands-on forensic evaluations of structures, preparing inspection reports, and making repair recommendations. *This job requires course work in Structural Analysis, Steel Design, and Concrete Design.

Transportation Engineer I (Highway Design)
Office of Highway Development- Highway Design 
This is an entry level position in the Highway Design or Innovative Contracting Divisions that will work with licensed and unlicensed engineers and technicians to complete engineering and related functions necessary to prepare construction contract documents, including plans, specifications and cost estimates, and to assist the Team Leader Engineer in project management. 

Transportation Engineer I (Plats and Surveys)
Office of Highway Development-Plats and Surveys Division 
This division provides Geomatic Engineering services for transportation projects throughout Maryland.  Primary functions include: Land Surveying (including performing topographic surveys, boundary surveys, hydraulic cross section surveys, and construction/right of way stake-out surveys); Geodetic Surveying (including control surveys and support for photogrammetric and scanning operations); Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) mapping of the various surveys (including data processing and base map development); Plat development for SHA right of way plats used for the acquisition and conveyance of real property (this includes land records research and analysis); and oversight of Subsurface Utility Engineering surveys.

Transportation Engineer I (Traffic)
Office of Traffic and Safety (Anne Arundel County)
This is an entry level transportation engineer position responsible to conduct/review traffic engineering analyses, review and design plans, perform constructability reviews, and/or construction inspection for proposed roadway improvement projects from Highway Design, Project Management Division District Offices, and the Office of Traffic and Safety. 

Transportation Engineer I (Highway Hydraulics)
Office of Highway Development - Highway Hydraulics 
This is an entry level engineering position in which the incumbent will be closely supervised in the review and investigation of drainage problems affecting state highways.  Design responsibilities for storm drains, stormwater management facilities, and erosion & sediment control plans on state projects will also be assigned.  This is a training level position, functioning in a design and support role on a hydraulic team.

Transportation Engineer I (Materials)
Office of Materials Technology (Anne Arundel County)
This is entry level position with the Office of Materials and Technology, performing engineering duties in support of project development highway infrastructure asset management and condition assessments.  Management the quality control of file data for Geotechnical explorations, Materials, Engineering and lab testing.  Constructions and maintenance support the geotechnical for geological  conditions.

Transportation Engineer I (Construction)
Various District Construction Offices in Maryland
This is entry level professional transportation engineering work applying engineering theories, principles, and standards to a variety of construction engineering tasks.  In a learning capacity, reviews plans and specifications, conducts materials testing evaluation and quality assurance; performs construction inspection and prepares supporting documentation under the direction of an experienced engineer.

Transportation Engineer I (Traffic)
Various District Traffic Offices in Maryland
This Traffic Engineer I entry level position is responsible for performing project reviews, traffic engineering studies and development of Work Zone Traffic Control Plans, which could require daily contact with public, other District Office Staff, contracted consultants and other government agencies for work related to the operation and safety of the roadway system in District 6. This work will be completed under the general supervision of the District 6 Traffic Team Leader or Senior Traffic Engineer.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Possession of a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited college or university. 

Experience: None required.

Applicants within six (6) months of meeting the minimum qualifications for the position may apply. In order to be considered, you must submit your driver's license and a copy of your transcript with your electronic or paper application. 
*Note all applications must include Driver's License number, State of Issue, and expiration date, as well as, proof of having a Civil Engineering Degree. Failure to provide either will result in disapproving your application.
