Spend your summer gaining valuable career experience with Snohomish County Public Works as a Design, Construction, or Survey Intern.

Engineering Services provides design, construction, and survey support for a wide variety of public works projects including road, bridge, drainage, and pedestrian projects to maintain and improve transportation and other infrastructures for the citizens of Snohomish County.  Interns gain hands-on experience under the direction of engineering professionals.

We have the following internships available in Engineering Services:

Construction Interns, up to 6 positions: Interns will assist in the oversight of public works construction projects.  Interns can expect to: assist engineers and inspectors in oversight of contractor work, do field measurement of contractor work for payment, create documentation for contractor payment, observe and record contractor work for compliance, and assist county staff with daily work.  Interns will be primarily working outside in varying weather conditions.

Design Intern, up to 2 positions:  Intern should expect to assist design engineers with the development of project scoping, field investigations, drainage analysis, and preparation of information into contract documents (plans, specifications, estimates).  The use of drafting software (AutoCAD) will be necessary to help analyze survey data and prepare plan details.  Some review of projects under construction will be likely to assist with design related issues.  Design interns may coordinate with all work groups (construction, geotechnical, survey, right-of-way, environmental).

Survey Interns, up to 2 positions:  Interns should expect to aid in survey related research including deeds, records of survey, plats and County road surveys. Research will be conducted electronically and in the County's records center. Prepare historic survey documents for archival. Assist with field crews gathering topographic information for the design of road improvements, drainage improvements, and improvements to County facilities.

The preferred candidates will be:
  • Enrolled in a civil engineering or construction management program
  • Familiar with computer programs (Microsoft Office suite and Google Earth)
  • Familiar with construction drawings and specifications

Ideally interns would start in May or June, (depending on student availability), and work for 8 - 12 weeks.  The intern season is May through September.  Rate of pay is determined by the number of full academic years the applicant has completed at an accredited college or university by the beginning of the internship.  Candidates must be majoring in civil engineering, construction management, or a closely related four year academic program.
