An FDA committee is reportedly recommending the approval of an opioid that critics are warning could be more dangerous than fentanyl or oxycontin.
It’s called DSUVIA and it’s allegedly 500 times more powerful than morphine, according to WSB-TV.
The pill, which goes underneath the tongue via an applicator, dissolves right away, making it more fast-acting than other opioids.
“We believe DSUVIA represents an important non-invasive acute pain management option with potential to significantly improve the current standard of care,” the drug maker, Acelrx, said in a statement.
Last year, the drug’s approval was rejected by the because of concerns it could end up in the wrong hands.
This time around, there are guidelines stating that the drug must be administered by a trained healthcare professional.
WSB-TV reports that the FDA is not required to follow the committee’s recommendation but usually does.
