Republicans and Democrats are going to great lengths to take the second district congressional seat.

On Thursday night Kansas Democrats launched this website asking ‘Who’s Steve Watkins?’ If you go try to go to PaulDavis.com an advertised option pops up for this website titled ‘WrongForUs.com’.

As the race intensifies each candidate in the local race for Congress is making these attempts to discredit their opponent. Kansas Democratic Party spokesperson Zach Helder said even if you ignore Watkins policy positions, his character is an issue.

“He has trouble telling the truth and this is a position of public trust,” Helder said. “When he’s telling people that he owned a small business that he never did, that he did things on Mount Everest or on the Iditarod that he never did, then voters are liable for him to continue lying to them again and again when he’s a Representative. That’s not acceptable when he’s in a position of public trust.”

They think that’s something that should be important to voters which is why they launched the website, so voters can see for themselves.

“One thing they really ought to look at is this very unusual bizarre pattern of lies that they’re not just misleading statements,” Helder said. “These are outright complete fabrication.”

Watkins pushes back on those attacks, saying the things on the attack website are misleading.

“Democrats have shown us that a page out of their playbook is to smear their opponents,” Watkins said. “When they don’t have a track record of legislation to sling their arrows at they’ll attack somebody’s character, and they’ll use underhanded and deceptive ways like URLs pointing people to false information and fake news.”

A national Republican group has fired back with this website, saying that Davis is actually the one telling lies.

“He’s basically a liberal running as a Republican and that’s not true and that’s not right,” Watkins said, “I’m a Republican, running as one and voters ought to know that when they go to the polls this November.”
