Greetings Colleagues, The D.I.V.A.S. (Distinguished, Intellectual, Virtuous, Academic, Sistas) have officially opened the Call for Proposals for the 2023 DIVAS Conference. This year’s conference theme is Truth to Power: Advocacy and Resistance in Educational Spaces. We invite you to submit a proposal on or before July 17, to present on October 7, 2023 at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, North Carolina. Our keynote speaker is Dr. Paula Price, Dean of the College of Education at North Carolina A&T State University. Presenting at the DIVAS Conference provides an opportunity to build your professional network and learn, reflect, and engage with colleagues. Presenting a content-rich session as an individual or a team is a wonderful way to share knowledge, experiences, and ideas. The conference’s diverse, community-generated program will showcase future directions, best practices, stories of successful collaborations, or solutions to our conference theme. ICYMI listen back to President Feely's inaugural lecture which she delivered yesterday afternoon to over 700 faculty, staff, students and guests in the UCD O’Reilly Hall. During her lecture President Feely said, “What I see in University College Dublin today, what I have seen of UCD in its impact on my own life and the life of Ireland, and what I want to see into the future is a university that can and does land real positive change in the world.  I want us to lift our ambition around the scale of what we can contribute to the big global concerns; to engage at a new level with Ireland and with the wider world; to understand and advance our strategic positioning; and to get our story and our stories out there with conviction and purpose.” Underfunding of higher education in Ireland however was putting a limit on what UCD and the country could achieve, noted President Feely. “The Government… has assessed the funding gap at €307 million per annum, and stated their commitment to closing this over successive budgets. There is a €1.5 billion surplus in the National Training Fund. The underfunding of higher education, acknowledged time and time again in international benchmarking, will without question limit what this country can achieve for itself and how we can contribute to addressing global challenges.”  President Feely urged the Government to address this shortfall describing the funding gap as “the single biggest threat to our university’s ability to deliver on our ambitions over the coming years." At the inaugural London Ball Foundation Education Summit on 23rd March, I had the great honour of moderating a panel discussion on the future of education with Professor Cecilia Chun (CUHK), Professor Stefano Tasselli (University of Exeter), Mrs Susannah Morley (British Council) and Professor Anthony Smith, BPharm, PhD, FRPharmS, PFHEA, FRSA. The event was hosted at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. There were some great questions from the audience on the future of inter-disciplinary research across different institutions (e.g. through co-supervision), modes of teaching delivery (online, face-to-face, blended) to suit different needs, and the enduring importance of developing specific knowledge in an area as well as social skills to communicate and interact with others. Professor Chun explained that online education would not replace face-to-face, but rather is becoming part of a panoply of modes of delivery. Our speakers also highlighted the major trends they see impacting universities in Hong Kong and in the UK over the coming years. Many of those are in fact global and societal trends, rather than reserved to universities or HK and Europe. We touched on the nature of work in an age powered by AI, the relationship between university and industry and resilience as part of mental health and wellbeing, collaboration across research disciplines and across geographic regions. Prof Smith also highlighted the importance of "disagreeing well" with those who hold different views. We talked about Hong Kong and London as connectors and Prof Tasselli introduced the concept of "temporal brokerage" to the audience, highlighting the importance of nodes that can operate across multiple time zones. Mrs Morley also stressed the role of alumni in helping to steer students making their way into the world. One key takeaway for the students in the audience was to "find what you love doing, and work hard doing that!" Universities offer a wealth of opportunities to try and explore different avenues, and it's important for students to seize those opportunities. #CUHK UCL University of Exeter British Council #futureeducation #highereducation

This is an outstanding achievement which is also underpinned by training staff and graduate students to become trauma-informed and anti-racist. Wellbeing and productivity rise when students and staff treat one another in a compassionate and person centred manner. Interpersonal mindfulness (the topic of my recently completed PhD) facilitates the qualities of empathy and self-compassion which are essential for productive and nurturing communities.

🌟 Exciting Collaborations on the Horizon! 🌟 🤝 I had the wonderful opportunity to meet with professors and leaders from UniSQ---Dr Lee Fergusson, Dr Susan Carter, Prof. Odette Best, Prof. Georgina Barton and explore potential research partnerships and collaborations between Morgan State University and University of Southern Queensland in collaboration with the STAR Scholars Network. The discussions were filled with enthusiasm and possibilities for joint projects that could benefit both institutions and the broader education community. 🎯 UniSQ's research clusters, with a focus on pedagogy, learning innovation, student experience, and community connections, caught our attention right away. These clusters provide a structured platform for researchers to delve into their interests more effectively. Moreover, we discovered our shared passion for exploring teacher well-being and its impact on student experiences – a vital area for enhancing the education landscape. 📚 Co-editing book series and collaborating on publications with scholars from both institutions emerged as an exciting prospect. This endeavor promises to enhance the visibility of our research and foster collaboration among faculty members. 🌍 Another promising avenue for collaboration lies in research related to international student well-being and experiences. As we exchanged ideas, it became evident that this collaboration could yield valuable insights for the global education community. 💼 Additionally, we discussed the potential for joint grant applications to support research initiatives and explored the possibility of hosting an international conference at UniSQ.
