Creating Shared Value

Creating Shared Value

The Asia Pacific region represents the largest growth opportunity in the world. Rapid urbanization, changing demographics, hyper globalization and the acceleration of innovation are driving our region to transform faster than any other. Asia Pacific is now home to the largest populations in the world, is experiencing the fastest growth in affluent consumers, and has the highest outlook for GDP growth. Underpinning all of this, is the quickly moving digital transformation that is being led by governments and enterprises alike.

As I have previously written, this level of change equates to tremendous opportunity. To succeed in our future, we at HP are doubling-down on these trends happening around us: focusing on outcomes and experiences in new fields, and investing in 3D printing, education and workspaces of the future. To put it simply, the world is changing and we are going to leverage that change to create opportunity. But that opportunity is not just for us at HP; it is also for our partners, our customers, and the communities we serve. The kind of change that we are experiencing requires business and society to come together. And if we can achieve that, we will deliver new value to our customers and drive the entire industry forward.

Company and community prosperity

The concept of Creating Shared Value is focused on delivering a positive cycle of company and community prosperity. Popularized by management expert and Harvard Business School professor Michael Porter and his co-author Mark Kramer, Shared Value has three basic levels: the first is reconceiving customer needs and products to meet societal demands and address unserved or underserved markets; the second is redefining efficiency through better use of resources and increased productivity across the value chain; the third is enabling local cluster development – building an ecosystem in the communities where a company operates to better develop skills and support a supplier base.

All three serve to reconnect a company’s success with social progress by ensuring that economic value is generated for the community at large.

At HP, we are working to create shared value by reimagining our products and services to deliver customer outcomes across verticals. We are delivering education and healthcare solutions to address day-to-day needs, developing technology that can democratize manufacturing, and offering tools to help governments provide digital services to their citizens.

More than a zero-sum game

Each of these efforts reflects the brand promise of HP: to Reinvent for our customers, our partners and the communities in which we serve. And we have reinvented the organization. Over the past year and a half, we have reinvented our structure, brand, services, systems, security, A3, gaming and manufacturing. We have reinvented our approach to working, and we continue to enact a Growth Mindset in everything we do. We have reinvented to ensure our products are enabling education, maximizing efficiencies for business, boosting productivity in healthcare and doing all of this with the most secure devices in the industry. Beyond this, we have reinvented our approach to sustainability and supply chain management, by reducing power consumption, CO2 emissions and recyclability – all while ensuring a more efficient cost structures.

But we have not done this alone. Behind each of these initiatives to Reinvent HP and to Create Shared Value is our partner community. Working closely with our partners, we have been able to leverage each other’s strengths, help our customers transform, and take advantage of emerging opportunities that provide value for us all.

And the key to our success – in growing our partner community and succeeding in our strategy – is to expand the total pool of opportunities. We want to create and capture more opportunities, delivering positive outcomes to end users, and growth for partners. This idea is embedded in our decision-making. We turn to our partners and their insights, skills, resources and products to better provide economic and social value for all involved.

Driving growth together

As we continue our commitment to reinvent and Create Shared Value, we are reigniting our work with our partners. More specifically, we are focused on supporting our partners with differentiated technology solutions that respond to the digital transformation that is happening within our industry.

For us, digital transformation has several implications. It means delivering a seamless, end-to-end experience. It means being more responsive to customers, ensuring there is digital delivery of services, faster innovation, and faster time to market. It means that the customer experience is embedded in our strategy and the ways we work.

And right now, there is huge potential for us to drive digital transformation forward while creating value and delivering growth. At HP, it is our role to be the drivers of change in our industry – delivering stronger security, greater efficiency and greater customer productivity. It is also our role to fully support our partners in pursuing growth, through investment in the brand, training, diversified portfolios, and sales enablement tools.

Together we can capture new opportunities, provide outcomes to our customers, and we can create shared value.

Hi Mark, we've got some great examples from Australia, particularly when it comes to education. We have brought computing solutions to schools in remote regions, greatly improving outcomes for teachers and students, while driving business for our partners. In the wider Asia Pacific region, HP works with a number of state governments and has developed solutions for e-delivery of government services as well as solutions for healthcare. In India, our local teams are working to support the Digital India initiative, building digital infrastructure to serve and empower citizens.
