Lecture: Intensive Alpine Scramble Leader Training

Leadership Seminar - Meany Lodge

Two day training for future scramble leaders covering outdoor leadership, leader technical skills including ropes and anchors, and trip planning. Part of the Intensive Alpine Scramble Leader course.

Carpools are strongly encouraged due to parking requirements to get up to Meany Lodge.  The lodge will provide snowcat to ride up.  We will met at Crystal Springs Sno-Park at 6:45 ready to leave on the snowcat at 7PM.  (It's a three mile walk if you're late :-).

This is the weekend workshop for students in the Intensive Scramble Leader course.  

Students will spend an intensive weekend at Meany Lodge from Friday night to Sunday during which we will cover:

  • Friday evening - Course Introduction and Requirements, Participant and Leadership Roles, Emergency Bivy Lecture
  • Saturday morning - Leadership Part I
  • Saturday early afternoon - Ropes and Anchors clinic
  • Saturday late afternoon - Leadership Part II & Scenarios
  • Saturday evening - Emergency Bivy Exercise
  • Sunday morning - Policies & procedures, route selection, planning, participant screening, and instructional skills (learning styles)
  • Sunday early afternoon - Operational leadership (on the trip), Leader self-care 

In addition to reading the required texts, leadership topics will be assigned to course participants in advance and you will be expected to teach that topic to the larger group.  Help and materials will be provided by instructors, but please plan to spend significant time preparing for this weekend to get the most out of it and support the rest of the group in their learning goals.  Upon completion of this weekend you will earn the Outdoor Leadership course badge.
