WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), a member of the U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, released a statement on Thursday after President Trump signed an executive order that will drive up health care costs, cause insurers to flee health care marketplaces, and worsen the number and quality of health care benefits provided to consumers.
“This executive order is a cruel, backdoor way to strip health benefits from Connecticut families. The new plans President Trump is proposing could refuse to cover hospital stays, prescription drugs, maternity care or mental health. And they’d bring back limits on how much treatment you can get, which means they’ll stop paying for health care if you get sick and start costing them too much money,” said Murphy. “That’s not health insurance, that’s fraud.”
Murphy has been vocal in his criticism of the Trump administration for systematically attempting to sabotage the health care system, including defunding advertisements ahead of open enrollment, shutting down Healthcare.gov for periods of time during open enrollment, and rolling back the federal requirement that health insurance plans cover birth control.
