PISCATAWAY – Responding to a growing and urgent need in the U.S. health care industry, the Rutgers School of Management and Labor Relations and the Rutgers School of Health Professions are teaming up to launch a first-of-its-kind Certified Health Care Manager™ (CHM) program in February 2017.

“How health care providers are paid for services has vastly changed,” said Bill Castellano, associate dean of Executive and Professional Education at the Rutgers School of Management and Labor Relations. “Payments are based on performance on a number of measures including quality of service, cost, and patient satisfaction. These new measurable performance criteria have required many providers to significantly transform how they organize work, measure and pay for performance, and manage staff.”

The schools conducted more than a dozen focus group sessions with health care leaders to determine the new competencies needed to comply with the ACA. Then, they developed an innovative curriculum that covers the changing health care landscape, leadership and relationship management, and the business principles that anchor health care financial decisions, quality patient care, and risk management.

"We're excited to partner with the School of Management and Labor Relations to offer this ground-breaking program," said Gwendolyn Mahon, Dean of Rutgers School of Health Professions. "Developing new programs such as this one takes us to another level in ensuring our students are equipped to meet the challenges of 21st century health care."

The program is designed for both aspiring and established mid-level health care managers. The first section, The Health Care Landscape, runs from Feb. 15 to May 24, 2017. Courses will be held one evening each week, 5 to 8 p.m., on the Livingston Campus of Rutgers-New Brunswick. Dates for the second and third sections will be announced later.

Participants who complete the three-semester program will receive a trademarked and nationally recognized Certified Health Care Manager™ (CHM) designation and have the opportunity to earn nine academic credit hours toward the master’s degree in health care management offered through the Rutgers School of Health Professions. Recertification is required to maintain the designation.
