When East Meets West: Health and Healing Across Global Cultures
The Humanities Department at Columbus State will host the third annual When East Meets West symposium on Friday, September 28, 2018 from 9:00am-3:00pm. This year’s topic focuses on Health and Healing Across Global Cultures, with particular focus on the intersection of eastern and western medical practices in the classical world as well as the modern era. The symposium offers a morning and afternoon session; each session consists of two speakers followed by a moderated discussion with the speakers and audience.
This year’s symposium is inspired by the new History of Western Medicine class created by CSCC Humanities’ faculty, specifically aimed at Health and Human Services students and professionals. Speakers include Dr. Maddalena Rumor, Visiting Assistant Professor, Case Western University, and Dr. Roberto Padilla, Associate Professor of History at the University of Toledo. The symposium offers educators, students, and the general public an opportunity to learn about how eastern and western medical practices connect with larger themes across history and culture.
The symposium presents an excellent professional development opportunity and fulfills 7.5 contact hours. Parking is free, and a buffet lunch is included with the $25.00 registration fee. Teachers will also receive resources for incorporating medical history and theory into broader themes in the classroom, including primary and secondary sources.
