GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - Congresswoman Lauren Boebert (R) and Mesa County Clerk and Recorder Tina Peters (R) released statements on Monday regarding the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s inquiries into Clerk Peters.

Last week, the homes of Peters and several others, including Lauren Boebert’s former campaign manager Sherronna Bishop, were searched by the FBI. According to Mesa County District Attorney Dan Rubinstein, the court-ordered search was part of an investigation of alleged election security breaches conducted by Mesa County officials including Clerk Peters and her associates. Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold (D) has alleged that Peters allowed a breach in chain-of-custody and security protocol regarding county voting systems took place in May of 2021.

Clerk Peters statement reads:

“Tuesday, large teams of heavily armed federal agents, using a battering ram to break down doors, raided the homes of Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters and several of her friends and colleagues, mostly women in their mid-60s. This is a level of weaponization of the Justice Department we haven’t seen since the McCarthy era. Thank God Tina wasn’t protesting critical race theory at a Virginia school board meeting or they might have brought two battering rams.

Tina Peters, who at the request of her constituents, investigated irregularities in the 2020 elections, has been the target of coordinated attacks from the organized Left. These FBI raids came recently after a whistleblower revealed the Justice Department was being used by U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland to spy and investigate parents deemed as ‘domestic terrorists’ that have questioned critical race theory being taught to their children in schools.

Peters understands that the Democrat-led Justice Department has been weaponized against potential opponents of a Democrat agenda, including herself.

Peters had this to say in response:

A huge portion of my constituents believes the irregularities of the 2020 election need to be investigated. The Democratic establishment shut me out from being able to investigate the 2020 election, and now the FBI is playing hardball, raiding homes with teams of armed agents to intimidate me and my friends, handcuffing parents in front of their children.

The fear and mistrust this is causing between the people and its government is simply unacceptable. The voters of Mesa County elected me to a job, and I have done that job faithfully, diligently, and with the best interests of the constituents of Mesa County.”

Representative Boebert’s statement reads:

“Many of the constituents I represent have expressed concern about the ongoing investigation into Mesa County Clerk and Recorder Tina Peters. At my request, I recently received a briefing from District Attorney Dan Rubinstein. He addressed my concerns about the involvement of the FBI and the absolute necessity for the presumption of innocence to be extended to all of those being investigated. As many of you know, I have been a vocal opponent of the overreach and targeted nature of the FBI’s activities on a national level. It was clear from our conversation that the District Attorney is being responsible in his approach and conducting his work in as timely and professional a manner as possible, as well as providing local oversight of the FBI’s role. I will continue to be briefed as the investigation proceeds and can reassure everyone that I will continue to advocate for fairness, timeliness, and strict adherence to the proper investigative process.”
