A giant rat packing quite a few extra pounds sparked a massive rescue effort involving nearly a dozen officers after it got stuck inside a manhole cover in Germany.

The overweight rodent was spotted in the small town of Bensheim near Frankfurt by a concerned passerby, who phoned authorities after watching the rat struggle to free itself from a gap in the sewer cover, the Telegraph reported.

Animal rescuer Michael Sehr was dispatched to the scene and later joined by a group of volunteer firemen after he was unable to lift the manhole cover on his own.

Video of the operation shows the firefighters surrounded the manhole and briefly struggling with the cover before inserting wedges beneath the lid and forcing it open. Sehr can then be seen sticking his hand inside the sewer and pushing the rat free from underneath.

The rescue efforts end with the rat wiggling free and then being placed inside the sewer. Overall, it took just more than five minutes.

“For a gentle liberation, the grate was raised by the Bensheim-Auerbach Fire brigade, so that the rat could be freed from the other side,” a translated press release from the German Animal Rescue reads.

“She had a lot of winter flab and was stuck fast at her hip — there was no going forward or back, “Sehr told local media before adding, “Even animals that hated by many deserve respect.”
