Mr. Castillo’s address will focus on FEMA’s desire to build a culture of preparedness, which encompasses the following four elements: incentivizing disaster mitigation investments, closing the insurance gap, helping people prepare for disasters, and fostering innovation.  Mr. Castillo will also speak about the recently-signed Disaster Recovery Reform Act, which provides greater investment in mitigation and prevention programming.

This panel discussion will focus on how the financial sector can better factor climate change and extreme weather into its work. Panelists will focus on how large private companies view their financial exposure to climate risk (and how they inform the public of that risk), and outline how extreme weather is being factored into investment decision-making, and provide examples of innovative climate financing.   

Objectives:

• Instruct on how the capital markets perceive climate change and extreme weather.
• Improve how the financial sector can factor DRR into their work.

This presentation will formally introduce a new online collaboration tool—GCcollab— that will facilitate DRR discussion year-round, and outline the new Circle of Influence pilot which is intended to grow grass-root collaboration and networking.  At the end, four Circle of Influence sessions will be briefly outlined so that Platform members may choose which to attend.
