Paws for PRIDE
We have no winners to celebrate due to our short week and crazy weather. However, don't worry; we will be back next week with some of the best looking mugs on the Southside. Think Spring!
Students, classes, and teachers are chosen at random to be recognized and celebrated for demonstrating one of our five character traits - Pride, Respect, Individual Responsibility, Determination & Empathy. Thank you to all of the Titus families for your support of our Paws for PRIDE program.
Kindness Week Kickoff!
4th graders in Mrs. London’s class wore their sneakers to kick off the first day of our Random Acts of Kindness week to put kindness in action!
Titus Annual Book Swap
Just a reminder that our “Book Swap” is in full swing. Each child is encouraged to donate gently used books of their choice on their reading level to be replaced with newer titles at our annual Read Across Titus Day on Friday, March 1st . Donations will be accepted through the final week of February.
Thank you for your support with our book swap!
Science Fun Day Is Coming
We are in the planning stages of our 2019 Science Fun Day, and we need your help to make the day a success. Please join us on Tuesday, February 26th at 6:30 PM in the Titus Dining Room for an informational meeting regarding volunteer opportunities. If you are unable to come to our first meeting on the 26th, still register for the meeting, and we will get in touch with you. If you have any questions, please reach out to Kim Anderson.
Your help and support providing the Science Fun Day experience for our students is greatly appreciated!
Parent PD - News from the Nurse
High Fructose Corn Syrup
In 1957 the process to create high fructose corn syrup from corn starch was discovered. However, it wasn’t until the early 1970s that manufacturers started using the process and the product to sweeten our foods. Prior to 1970, food was sweetened with good old regular sugar! This fine tuning of high fructose corn syrup manufacturing occurred during a period in U.S. history when sugar was becoming more expensive (in part due to trade restrictions) and corn was becoming cheaper. Farm subsidies encouraging farmers to produce as much corn as possible resulted in excess supply and thus falling prices. Manufacturers stood to save money by switching to corn-based ingredients. In 1980, Coca-Cola began using high fructose corn syrup in its beverages, and by the mid-80s most other soft drink companies had followed suit.
SO…. what’s the problem with food sweetened with high fructose corn syrup? Because of the chemical structure the brain, liver, and the pancreas respond very differently to high fructose corn syrup than to glucose and can cause metabolic dysfunction, obesity, and a desire to eat more high fructose corn syrup. It is in EVERYTHING your CHILDREN EAT! READ the nutrition labels of your family’s food and check out this video for more information.
