How to Make Chocolate Hummus—We Think It's Better Than Cookie Dough

Our chocolate hummus recipe will satisfy any chocolate craving and is rich in protein (a total bonus).

We're not going to lie. When we first heard chocolate hummus was a thing, we couldn't decide whether it was genius or downright weird. Now that we've tried it, the verdict is in: Chocolate hummus is smooth, chocolaty, and absolutely brilliant. This dessert spread satisfied our chocolate cravings, and it's packed with protein (hummus is made with chickpeas). What's not to love?

It doesn't hurt that chocolate hummus looks gorgeous when served in a bowl with a drizzle of pure maple syrup, dusted with cocoa powder and flaky salt. The tahini found in standard hummus also plays a part in this dessert variation. In chocolate hummus, though, it's reminiscent of halva (a sweet and fudge-like sesame-based confection that's a staple in Middle Eastern markets).

Chocolate hummus is easy to make (and enjoy) at home. Have chocolate hummus as a snack or dessert with sliced apples, strawberries, pretzels, and even pita chips. Our chocolate hummus recipe is so unbelievably good; don’t say we didn’t warn you.

Making Chocolate Hummus

Ingredients

  • 1 15-oz. can chickpeas, drained and rinsed (1½ cups)
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons pure maple syrup
  • 3 tablespoons tahini
  • 1½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • a small pinch of salt
  • 4 tablespoons water

Steps

  1. In the bowl of a food processor, add all ingredients and process until smooth.
  2. Serve in a bowl.
  3. Drizzle with maple syrup, and top with cocoa powder and flaky salt.
