WILMINGTON -- Another student housing complex could be opened right next door to the University of North Carolina Wilmington.

A Myrtle Beach-based developer has proposed a 45-unit multi-family complex on College Acres Drive, named the Cottages at College Acres. The land backs up to Randall Drive on the north side of UNCW's campus.

According to plans submitted to the city by College Acres Development, LLC, the complex would feature 10 three-bedroom townhomes and 35 four-bedroom townhomes. A fence would ring the property, with a multi-use path leading onto campus. Plans say the developer will coordinate with UNCW to connect the path to the existing Wave Transit bus stop on Randall Drive.

Three single-family homes currently on the land would have to be demolished.

A 109-space parking area would run between the units, spread across 16 individual buildings. A 1,900-square-foot retail space is also included in the plans.

The project is scheduled to go before the city's technical review committee Jan. 17.
