Luke Buchanan redefines space through art. In “Parameters,” his series of multi-media works on display at Anchorlight Wilmington, the Raleigh-based artist manipulates seemingly mundane images of old warehouses, rickety fire escapes and vast parking lots, incorporating them into vivid, layered collages portraying entirely new realms that are fictional yet familiar. Details: “Parameters” closes with a public reception 6 to 9 p.m. Jan. 18 at Anchorlight Wilmington, 1 S. Front St. Buchanan will give an artist talk at 6:30 p.m. AnchorlightRaleigh.com. People have been painting with encaustics — the process of fusing colorful and luminous layers of wax to a support surface — since the fifth century B.C. Maybe it’s all that history, or maybe it’s the sense of mystery embedded in those frosty layers, but there’s something enchanting about the medium, on display in Art in Bloom Gallery’s “Ancient Art Revisited: A Group Encaustic Exhibit.” The group exhibition includes wax works by Judy Hintz Cox, Liz Hosier, Helen Lewis, Charles Robertson and Kirah Van Sickle. Van Sickle's "Wax Play" is pictured above. Details: “Ancient Art Revisited” is on display through Feb. 9 at Art in Bloom Gallery, 210 Princess St. Opening reception is 6-8 p.m. Jan. 11.
