UNCW breaks ground on $147 million student housing

UNCW Chancellor Jose Sartarelli said Thursday that while plans for the new student housing village had been in the works since 2016, Hurricane Florence striking campus last September forced campus officials to accelerate the planning process. The storm destroyed the 13 buildings of the old University Apartments, now demolished, costing 396 students their beds. The new village will have room for 1,814 students. "It's a learning and living environment much more sophisticated and complex than it used to be," Sartarelli said. [CAMMIE BELLAMY/STARNEWS]

The new student housing village will sit on the southeast end of UNCW's campus, near the existing Galloway, Blek and Graham-Hewlett residence halls. Chancellor Jose Sartarelli said the project will make that area the center of student housing on campus. "By the end of this process, we'll probably have over 5,500 students living on campus, and half of them will be living here," he said. [CAMMIE BELLAMY/STARNEWS]
