Mexico Cuts Ties With Ecuador Following Police Raid on Quito Embassy

 

Former Mexican vice president Jorge Glas, who in December had a warrant issued for his arrest on corruption charges and subsequently fled to Ecuador for political asylum, was apprehended during a raid by Ecuadorian police in the capital city of Quito, a move which has been deemed by Central and South American heads of state as both a "flagrant violation of international law" and an "unusual and reprehensible" act. Powerful Taiwan Earthquake Kills at Least 13, Leaves More Than 1,000 Stranded

 

A magnitude 7.7 earthquake with an epicenter off the eastern coast of Taiwan, and said to be the strongest in 25 years to strike the region, damaged buildings, homes, killed at least 13 people and left thousands injured and stranded, with the hardest hit area centered around the eastern city of Hualien. Israeli Airstrikes Destroy Iranian Embassy in Damascus, Killing 12, Including Two IRG Commanders

 

The Iranian government blamed both the United States and Israel for a recent airstrike that destroyed its consulate building in the Syrian capital city of Damascus, an attack which killed at least twelve people, including Syrian citizens, two commanders of the Revolutionary Guard and a member of the Hezbollah militant group, stoking fears from the West of retaliation from Tehran. A fire at the Masquerade nightclub, which sits in the basement of a 16-story building in the central district of the capital city Istanbul, Turkey, a site that was under renovation and closed at the time for the holy Muslim month of Ramadan, killed 29 people, mostly construction workers, a blaze said to be most likely caused by welding sparks according Turkish media reports. A mob in the Mexican town of Taxco, in the northern border state of Chihuahua, brutally beat a woman to death in broad daylight in front of police, for allegedly kidnapping and killing an 8-year-old girl who went missing and was later found dead on the side of road, just hours before the City's famous Holy Week procession. Suspect Arrested in Canada For Mass Killing of Sri Lankan Family
