Leiden Law School

Research

Research at Leiden Law School means research at the highest level. Leiden Law School has eight broad research programmes and one specific ‘profile area’: Interaction between legal systems - which aims to understand the complex interaction between the various levels of jurisdiction and to solve the resulting problems and questions.

Research at Leiden Law School is concentrated in eight research programmes, in which researchers from different (legal) disciplines work together. This focus came about through the notion that important research questions are mostly found at the interaction between the various disciplines.

Research Focus Areas

The University concentrates its efforts on a limited number of research areas, referred to as the research focus areas. These are the fields in which the University and its faculties have sufficient qualitative and quantitative resources to maintain prestige or to acquire it, to enable it to be competitive when applying for external research grants and to attract excellent scholars

The focus area Interaction between legal systems is the most important at our Faculty. Interaction between Legal Systems is a research area that is multi-disciplinary and promotes innovative research focussing in content on the interaction between legal systems. For the research period 2016-2020 three winning projects were selected out of all proposals.

The two other research focus areas in which our researchers participate are Political legitimacy: institutions and identities, and Asian Modernities and Traditions.

Combining various disciplines, Leiden University researchers work together to formulate innovative solutions for societal problems. Researchers from Leiden Law School are active in the field of law, politics and administration. Leiden Law School is responsible for the following four research dossiers:
