Fetal Diagnostic Center in Burlington, VT

At the Fetal Diagnostic Center, it is our goal to reassure families when pregnancies are normal and to diagnose abnormalities that are present and compassionately help families understand the impact of those findings. We work closely with the patient and her family, as well as the obstetricians or midwifes involved.

Fetal Diagnostic Center: What You Need to Know

Experienced, Trusted Expertise

The Fetal Diagnostic Center is accredited by the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine in the area of obstetrical ultrasound, one of only 6 practices in the state receiving that accreditation and the only one that makes assessment of the fetus their primary focus. Additionally, we have 3 individuals who are certified by the Fetal Medicine Foundation to perform Nuchal Translucency measurements as part of the Ultrascreen, a first-trimester Down syndrome/trisomy 18 risk assessment study.

We offer this screening both to low-risk women who wish to obtain aneuploidy screening as early as possible and also to high-risk women who wish to learn their risk as accurately as possible before making a decision regarding invasive diagnostic tests such as amniocentesis or chorion villus sampling.

Teamwork

The Fetal Diagnostic Center performs prenatal diagnosis and counseling working in partnership with the following groups at The UVM Medical Center:

  • High-Risk Obstetrics (Maternal Fetal Medicine)
  • Radiology
  • Pediatric Cardiology
  • Genetics

The teams work together to help women and their families understand what is available to confirm and maintain the health and well-being of their baby-to-be. While it is our wish that all of the families we meet have normal babies, when there is an increased risk of an abnormality or an abnormality is discovered, it is our goal and commitment to offer families information, understanding and support in a compassionate and caring fashion.
