Q: Is UHV hosting another leadership conference for area high school students this year?

A: The University of Houston-Victoria is getting ready for its fifth annual ROAR Leadership Conference on Oct. 20.

The conference is an opportunity for area high school seniors and students from Victoria College and UH System universities to learn about how they can be empowered to be leaders and find inspiration to improve their skills.

The 2017 conference was attended by about 100 students, and UHV is hoping to reach even more students this year. The event is free, and breakfast and lunch will be provided. Students also will receive a free T-shirt.

The event will begin at 9 a.m. with breakfast and check-in in the UHV University North lobby, 3007 N. Ben Wilson St. After the welcome at 9:45 a.m., students will attend breakout sessions offered by UHV faculty and staff. Topics covered in the breakout sessions will include the importance of communication skills, problem-solving, social responsibility and teamwork.

After the breakout sessions, students will listen to keynote speaker Dakota Doman, vice president for student affairs and enrollment management at Philander Smith College in Little Rock, Ark., and former director of UHV Student Life and Services.

Doman’s return to UHV to participate in the conference is especially meaningful because the conference falls on his birthday. We are honored to know he is willing to spend his special day with us and talk to students about how they can be strong leaders.

After a lunch break, students will go back into breakout sessions and then take some time in small groups to discuss what they learned during the conference. The small groups will be led by UHV student leaders who will have some prepared questions. In addition, the student leaders will share their own experiences with being involved in student organizations and explain how that involvement strengthened their relationships with others and helped them develop leadership and social skills.

The ROAR Leadership Conference is an outstanding event that helps students learn how they can grow and identify marketable skills, and we are excited to see how many students will participate this year.

If you know of students who should attend this event, have them go to uhv.edu/student-life/leadership-development/ conference and click on the link at the bottom of the webpage to register. This will help us know how many meals to order and T-shirt sizes.
