Defense Ministers Mariusz Blaszczak of Poland and Sebastien Lecornu of France have approved a contract for the delivery of 2 French observation satellites with a ground receiving station in Poland.
Preparations for space-based Earth observation and military reconnaissance cooperation with the French partner had been underway since spring of this year, with decisions to use data from a broader constellation of satellites to track, among other things, what was happening beyond Poland's eastern border accelerated by Vladimir Putin's aggression in Ukraine.
"The satellites will enhance the Polish Armed Forces' ability to acquire reconnaissance data based on observation satellites operating within the Polish-French constellation," Blaszczak tweeted.
The satellites will make it possible to acquire imaging reconnaissance data with an accuracy of up to 30 centimeters, and operating within the constellation will allow imaging a much larger area of the Earth than is possible for a single country.
According to MILMAG magazine's experts, the introduction of these satellites will be a significant enhancement of the Polish Army's capabilities when it comes to providing situational awareness. To date, Poland has used the COSMO-SkyMed system, operated in cooperation with Italy, and data from civilian entities (including commercial ones). The French satellites will be the first used directly by the Armed Forces, and as optoelectronic systems they will be a good complement to COSMO-SkyMed, which uses Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) technology. The purchase of French (and in the future other) satellites also provides an opportunity for further expansion of the ground segment in the form of the Bialobrzegi Imaging Reconnaissance Center.
On the occasion of the Warsaw meeting, the Polish and French defense ministers also discussed the cooperation of the two countries' defense ministries within the framework of international formats: North Atlantic Alliance, the European Union and the Visegrad Group as well as issues of bilateral military cooperation. The politicians also discussed the implementation of the Strategic Compass, as well as the security situation in the region with particular emphasis on support for Ukraine, which is defending itself against Russian aggression.
