Democrats’ attacks on Rick Scott are taking a toll

Florida’s Republican governor, Rick Scott, led incumbent Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson for much of the summer. Although the polls are mixed, he’s fallen behind in two of the last three public opinion polls, both taken by nationally respected pollsters.

That might be partly because of hard-hitting negative ads this month on Scott’s prior business career. This one, from the Nelson campaign, gives a good sample of the hits that Democrats are using against him:

Scott has released a response ad, and it’s the sixth negative English-language 30-second spot in a row that his campaign has put up on the internet:

Campaigns usually become more negative when they think they are losing. But it’s worth mentioning that Scott’s last Spanish-language ad was a positive spot in which he boasted of being independent from President Trump. There are also strong indications that Scott is doing quite well with Hispanic voters.
