SCIENCE AND STORYTIME: Science Books Come to Life

Sunday, June 3, 2018
11:00 am - 5:00 pm

How are space and sea similar? Is it possible to build a faster paper airplane? Who is Katherine Johnson, and how did she save Apollo 13? What does the vastness of space look like from the confines of a tiny rocket? What makes a beehive–and can you turn the pages of a book into one? This wide range of questions, and more still, will be answered by children’s book authors Lynn Brunelle, Helaine Becker, “Science Bob” Pflugfelder, Jennifer Swanson, Ken Blackburn, and Mike Vago, who will read from and sign their books while also helping you build your own beehives, rockets, and super-fast paper airplanes.

Science and Storytime is FREE and open to the public. RSVP not required, but encouraged. RSVP HERE!

Program Schedule:

Mike Vago | 11:00AM—12:00PM | Rocket: A Journey Through the Pages
In Rocket, the story of a spacecraft moving through space, the reader pilots a three-dimensional plastic rocket that stays within the pages of the book, moving on an internal track from front to back.

“Science Bob” Pflugfelder | 12:00PM—12:30PM | Nick and Tesla Series
Join “Science Bob” as he introduces you to Nick and Tesla, bright 11-year-old siblings with a knack for science, electronics, and getting into trouble.

Jennifer Swanson | 1:00PM—2:00PM | Astronaut-Aquanaut: How Space Science and Sea Science Interact
Both deep-sea and space explorers, explains Swanson, have to worry about pressure, temperature, climate, and, most importantly, how to survive in a remote and hostile environment.

Ken Blackburn | 2:00PM—3:00PM | Pocket Flyers Paper Airplane Book
Guinness Record Holder and Air Force aerospace engineer Ken Blackburn takes complicated aeronautical engineering and brings it to the simplest of pastimes, creating a paper airplane.

Helaine Becker | 3:00PM—4:00PM | Counting on Katherine: How Katherine Johnson Saved Apollo 13
From Katherine’s early beginnings as a gifted student to her heroic accomplishments as a prominent mathematician at NASA, this groundbreaking American woman not only calculated the course of moon landings but also saved lives and made enormous contributions to history.

Lynn Brunelle | 4:00PM—5:00PM | Turn this Book into a Beehive
Learn all about bees, their struggles, and their importance to the ecosystem, then learn how you can help out by creating a new home.
