PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – The Hope Point Tower is still alive. For now.
The Providence City Council voted Thursday to send a New York developer’s request for a zoning change in order to build the state’s tallest building on Parcel 42 along Dyer Street on the former I-195 land back to the Ordinance Committee for further vetting.
The committee previously recommended that the council vote down developer Jason Fane’s request to expand the city’s maximum building height requirement in the neighborhood from 130 feet to 600 feet so that a 46-story residential tower can be built, but the majority of the council worked behind the scenes to force the proposal back to committee.
Mayor Jorge Elorza has said he is open to the zoning change, but has questions about the design of the project.
City Council President David Salvatore has said he will not support the zoning change and encouraged Fane to consider other locations in the city for the tower. Fane has repeatedly said he is only interested in Parcel 42.
Dante Bellini, a spokesperson for Fane, said his client is looking forward to presenting his plan to the council.
