PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Police are working to identify and locate a man who they say broke into Providence City Hall and stole several items over the weekend.

According to the police report obtained by Eyewitness News, the suspect got inside around 2:30 a.m. Saturday by breaking a window on the Washington Street side of the building.

After spending about an hour inside, the man left through a first-floor exit – setting off the building’s alarm – then fled southbound on Eddy Street, the report said.

Emily Crowell, a spokesperson for Mayor Jorge Elorza, said the suspect made off with two laptops, a projector, a camera, and a WiFi hotspot device. She said the laptops were stolen from the Center for City Services, which runs PVD311. She said there was no personal info about residents on the computers, because the service is hosted online and city employees have to log in with a username and password to gain access.

In the report, police said they were told the projector is worth approximately $1,000, one of the laptops is worth around $800, and the camera is worth about $600.

Police released surveillance images of the man, which shows him wearing a red t-shirt, white shorts, black sneakers, a tan baseball hat and carrying a backpack. He’s believed to be white or Hispanic and stand approximately 6 feet tall.

Anyone with information on the suspect is asked to call Detective Sgt. William Dwyer at (401) 243-6380 or wdwyer@providenceri.gov.
