UNCW Softball season ends in CAA Tournament


HARRISONBURG, Virginia (UNCWSports.com) – Sophomore Dominique Travers extended her hitting streak to nine straight games, but UNCW was limited to just five hits as the Seahawks were eliminated from the Colonial Athletic Association Softball Championship with a 4-0 loss against the College of Charleston on Thursday afternoon.

The loss ends the Seahawks’ season at 20-29 while Charleston improves its record to 31-26 while advancing to face James Madison in an elimination game on Thursday night.

Travers, who finished the season as the Seahawks’ leading hitter with a .302 average, went 1-for-2 with a walk as the Seahawks had five different players record a hit.

Junior Lacey Fox took the loss in the circle after giving up one run on one hit and four walks in 1.2 innings.

Charleston had five different players account for its five hits while sophomore Summer Jenkins earned the shutout victory after scattering five hits with three walks in a complete game effort.

How It Happened: Charleston took the lead for good in the top of the second inning by taking advantage of four consecutive walks with two outs. The Cougars added a run in the fourth inning on a solo home run by Gracyn Thrasher before two more runs scored in the fifth.

Inside the Box Score: UNCW was 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and left seven runners on base … The teams combined to have the leadoff runner reach base three times … In addition, UNCW and Charleston each had 11 ground ball outs.

Notes: The loss ends the college careers for seniors Kelsey BryanSarah Davis and Tracy Haynes, who helped the Seahawks to a record-tying 103 wins over the last four years … UNCW reached the CAA Championship for the second straight season and reached the 20-win plateau for the third consecutive year … Travers finishes the season hitting 13-for-24 over the last nine games … After losing all three games during the regular season series, Charleston took both contests against the Seahawks in the CAA Championship … UNCW was shut out for the seventh time this season.
