UNCW’s Scalf wins 900th Game

BROOKLINE, MA (UNCW Sports) – UNCW struck for a run in the top of the 10th inning on a squeeze play to give Head Coach Mark Scalf his 900th career win with a 7-6 extra inning win in game one of a twinbill at Northeastern on Friday.

The Seahawks saw their records move to 30-19 overall and 12-8 in the Colonial Athletic Association after Northeastern earned a split of the doubleheader with a 7-4 win in game two. The Huskies, meanwhile, finished the day at 31-16 and 15-5 in the conference.

With the win, the Seahawks clinched a CAA tournament berth.

Austin Warren picked up the win in game one to improve to 7-0 whileClark Cota converted his league-leading 12th save of the season in the opener.

In the nightcap, Brian Christian (3-5) earned the win for the Huskies and Andrew Misiaszek nailed down his 11th save.

Cole Weiss collected three hits in the opener and drove in three runs for the Seahawks. Mason Berne added two hits. Kep Brown drove in three runs on the strength of a double and a walk for UNCW in game two.

Ryan Solomon and Cam Walsh collected two hits apiece for Northeastern in the first game and Jake Farrell had the big second game, hitting a home run and a triple to knock in five runs.

How it happened Game 1: Northeastern grabbed a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the seventh, but UNCW answered with a run in the top of the eighth. In the Seahawk tenth, Berne opened the inning with a single and pinch runner Levi Gesell advanced to second on a passed ball. Greg Jones drew a walk and both runners moved up on a sac bunt by Kep Brown. Weiss then followed with a squeeze bunt to score Gesell for a 7-6 lead.

How it happened Game 2: The Huskies sent eight hitters to the plate in a four-run second inning against losing pitcher Blake Morgan. Farrell delivered the big hit in the inning with a bases-load triple.

Notes: Berne tied the school record of reaching base safely to 43 consecutive games … UNCW improved to 12-2 in one-run games … On the road the Seahawks are now 11-7.
