YDR's editorial board endorses soft-spoken Bob Casey over Lou Barletta (opinion)

YDR Editorial Board
U.S. Senator Bob Casey Jr.

U.S. Sen. Bob Casey is not flashy. He’s soft-spoken, even-tempered – some might even say he’s plain vanilla.

But you know what? In these highly polarized times, with so much inflammatory rhetoric flung about, that’s not such a bad thing. We need some thoughtful, sober leaders at the table – some adult supervision as a counterbalance to President Trump.

We understand that, even as a more moderate Democrat, Sen. Casey’s policies and positions are to the left of many right of center York countians’.

But if you look at our state’s Senate delegation holistically – factoring in conservative Republican Sen. Pat Toomey – purple Pennsylvania is properly represented in the upper chamber. Casey and Toomey balance each other out. Pennsylvania’s voice in the Senate is not too conservative, not too liberal. It’s just right.

That’s why we think Sen. Casey is a better choice than Republican opponent Lou Barletta – who is sharp-elbowed and politically more aligned with Mr. Trump.

Voters, of course, will make their own decisions, but we feel Mr. Casey deserves another term.

Note: Endorsements reflect the opinions of the editorial board, not necessarily those of YDR editors, reporters and photographers.
